about

Clear Muted Sine Recovery was made with the intention of being played quietly; subtle, almost subliminal music. Elements typically prominent in rhythmic electronic music, such as percussion and bass, are instead placed very low in the mix, along with other, almost inaudible textures.

It's a typically rhythmic Sunplus record, but it was a very conscious effort to refrain from writing 'on the grid' for the most part; maintaining a loose form, avoiding repeated sequences and complex rhythms, and be as stripped back as possible. This loosely structured style was influenced mainly by German bands Can and pre-Autobahn era Kraftwerk, and perhaps even more so by former Boredoms guitarist Seiichi Yamamoto.

While not themed about anything specific, it was influenced in part by microscopic and hidden things; communicating amoebic creatures, subatomic particles, inaudible frequencies given off by plant life, colours on the light spectrum that cannot be seen with the naked eye. Musical elements include heavily processed percussion, sine waves, randomly generated melodies, granular synthesis, field recordings of various water sources.

The cover art was designed by Hannah Joseph; featuring three of her original illustrations, layered on top of one another. Each layer depicts a room the album was recorded in, albeit apocalyptic depictions of each room, overrun with plant life.

Close the door, sit down, switch off phone & lights, and press play on this gentle ambient minimalist beauty. At times tribal, hypnotic, ambiguous, under-stated sonic preamble through minutiae of life.
